Founders of YCP "SIFE" go to Washington
Posted March 30, 2004FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania – Six business students from the York College SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) organization traveled to Washington, D.C. on March 29, to show their extensive involvement with the York Community in a regional competition. These founders of the SIFE program represented YCP well, receiving “Rookie of the Year” honors and placing “Second Runner-Up.”
SIFE, a community outreach program available at hundreds of schools around the world, enables students to expand their education outside of the classroom, while helping others in the community. Wendelyn Bell, Trevor Hoffman, Sheri Gibson, Josh Piskula, Kara Skaflestad, and Dan Troy are the founders of the inaugural York College SIFE. With the help of their advisors, Dr. David Greisler, Professor Chris Meisenhelter, and Dr. Ken Slaysman, the students were able to take part in several community outreach projects such as the Operations Management Mentoring Program and the Business Plan and Strategy Project.
The introduction of SIFE to YCP came about from the relationship between Graham Packaging Corporation and York College. Professor Meisenhelter and Mr. Phil Yates, CEO of Graham Packaging, spoke about the opportunities SIFE can provide for college students and chose to begin a working relationship. In order to compete in the regional competition, Graham Packaging generously sponsored YCP by funding their trip to Washington, D.C.
