FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

York, Pennsylvania -- If you look to the skies and dream, an upcoming lecture at York College may be right up your cosmic alley! Dr. John Wood, an astronomer and optical engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, will be on campus in March. He'll be speaking about something that's been in the news a lot lately, the Hubble Space Telescope project. Since 1990, Dr. Wood has been one of the lead engineers on the bus-sized eye in the sky.

A graduate of Swarthmore College, Dr. Wood earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Astronomy from Indiana University. He has been at Goddard for twenty years. In addition to the Hubble project, Wood has been lead optical engineer on other Space Flight Center initiatives such as the Mars Observer Laser Altimeter and the Diffuse Infrared Experiment aboard the Cosmic Background Explorer. Winner of the 1992 NASA exceptional service medal and the 1994 NASA exceptional achievement medal, Wood is the author of 50 research papers in astronomy and space optics.

Dr. Wood will talk about astronomy, his experiences with the space program, and perhaps a controversial new plan to retire the Hubble. His lecture is scheduled for March 11 at 7:30 p.m. in DeMeester Theater. It is free and open to the public. For more information call (717) 815-1239.
