Governor Ridge Sends Professor on Mission to South Africa
Posted September 11, 1998FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania--Governor Tom Ridge will be sending Marilyn Daly to South Africa. Daly is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at York College of Pennsylvania. She will help conduct an eight-day trade mission with Secretary Samuel Hayes. Daly will leave for Africa's "biggest emerging market," to create jobs for Pennsylvanians on September 12 and return on September 19.
Daly will be a part of the Department of Agriculture group while she is in South Africa. She is a well-respected expert in the area of gardening, regularly writing articles for Better Homes and Gardens. Daly was selected for this mission because of extensive research she has done to improve the diversity and quality of plants while encouraging conservation through cultivation.
Daly said, "My main goal is to bring back seeds from South Africa to conduct plant trials in the classroom with my Biology students." She is hoping that with the lifting of sanctions against South Africa, her plants will increase in popularity as the world discovers her floral riches.
This first-ever trade mission will be led by four Cabinet secretaries and involve 22 Pennsylvania employers, research institutions and associations. "As Pennsylvania becomes a leader in the new global economy, we must expand our presence in emerging markets like South Africa," Gov. Ridge said. "Our goal is simple: to increase our exports and create jobs in every region of Pennsylvania."
