York, Pennsylvania--Karen Bureau will receive the Honorary Degree from York College President George W. Waldner during Winter Commencement exercises on Tuesday, December 22 at 10:30 a.m. in Wolf Gymnasium.

Ms. Bureau is a native from Hanover, Pennsylvania, and is now one of the world's top operatic sopranos. Her career began eight years after graduating from York College in 1973. Her interest for singing unfolded after partaking in the York College Concert Choir.

In 1982, Ms. Bureau made her operatic debut as the Lady-in-Waiting in Verdi's "Macbeth" at the New York Metropolitan Opera House. A debut most singers can only dream of having. A year later she performed for then President Ronald Reagan in the East Room of the White House to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Metropolitan opera.

In 1984, she starred in her first major role as Elisabeth in "Tannhäuser" with the Seattle Opera. After touring some of the prominent opera houses in the United States, she was offered a full-time position in Hannover, Germany. Ironically, she moved from Hanover, Pennsylvania to Hannover, Germany in 1986. It began her eleven and one-half year stint in Europe, the place where Opera was born.
