York College Striving to Help the Community
Posted February 23, 1999FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania--Students at York College of Pennsylvania are finding that education and helping the community is a beneficial combination. Dr. David Polk, an Associate Professor of Behavioral Sciences, assigned his research students a project that enables them to work closely with the South George Street Partnership. The Partnership is a conglomerate of business leaders helping to rejuvenate the area.
The students are trying to identify the characteristics of a strong community versus a weak one. Instead of trying to change individuals and families, they are looking at how to revamp the community. By interviewing area residents they can access the steps necessary to make the community a better place. The students have taken to the streets, going door to door, gathering statistical information to help determine what steps are needed to restore the neighborhood and make it a safer place to live.
The research project is a continuation of last years, and will perpetuate through the semester. They have already made a difference in the community with their most recent research.
