Posted June 3, 1999FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania --WITF-FM's Next Generation Festival presents internationally-known pianist Awadagin Pratt and friends for a free chamber music concert on Monday, June 14, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. in YCP's MAC Recital Hall.
Five young string musicians will join Artistic Director Pratt in music of J.S. Bach, Brahms and other composers. For the Brahms Sextet in B flat, Pratt will demonstrate his exceptional musical talents by playing his second instrument of choice, the violin. Pratt was the first student at Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory of Music to receive simultaneous degrees in piano, violin and conducting.
Among the "next generation" of concert artists, pianist Awadagin Pratt is increasingly acclaimed as one of tomorrow's superstars. He is an artist who challenges the classical music establishment and fans alike, forcing them to rethink the way the music is perceived and heard.
Pratt eschews the traditional tuxedo in favor of more casual wear. "I think if the soloist or recitalist is coming out less dressed-up, some people will feel more comfortable coming," says Pratt. As for the dreadlocks Pratt sports, they go back to his student days in 1988 when he was impressed with French tennis player Yannick Noag, who wore the same style.
In 1992 Pratt won the Naumburg International Piano Competition. His physical appearance caused a buzz, but by the end of his performance, he had won over the judges and audience, and rave reviews have been coming in ever since.
The Next Generation Festival affords chamber music lovers the opportunity to see a new generation of classical music talent and gives the young musicians greater experience and exposure to the public. In addition, the Festival offers a chance for people of all ages to learn to appreciate and gain a greater understanding of the varieties of classical music.
General admission seats for the free evening concert may be reserved by calling The Box at 717-214-ARTS. There will also be seats available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. seating is limited.
