York College Student to Receive Merit Award From Red Cross for Saving a Life
Posted March 31, 2000FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania--On November 23, 1999, Jay Kauffman was playing basketball in the York College gym. Suddenly, he collapsed face down on the floor--and within minutes he stopped breathing and his heart stopped. What could have been yet another fatal heart attack became yet another testament to American Red Cross training.
York College student Kevin Jones remembered the Red Cross training he had received at the College and immediately began performing CPR on Kauffman with a fellow student, Tom Lauber. When paramedics arrived, they were able to re-start Kauffman's heart. Another life was saved.
Kevin Jones will receive a Certificate of Merit Award from the American Red Cross on Tuesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m. in DeMeester Theater at York College. The award is presented to individuals who have sustained or saved a life as a direct result of American Red Cross training. The Certificate of Merit Award is signed by both the president of the United States, Bill Clinton, and the president of the National Red Cross, Dr. Bernadine Healy.
Tom Lauber, who assisted Kevin Jones in performing CPR, will receive a Good Neighbor Award. The award recognizes those who have made a significant humanitarian contribution in support of the American Red Cross. Lauber is a former Army Medic.
“Mr. Kaufmann is alive today because of the heroic efforts of these young men,” said Jim Liddle, Chairman of York County's Red Cross Board of Directors. “Both Kevin and Tom are role models for this community and for this campus. We are proud that both of these young men committed themselves to learning life-saving skills.”
