Congressman Goodling to Speak at Spring Commencement

York, Pennsylvania--United States Congressman Bill Goodling (R-PA) will give the keynote address at York College of Pennsylvania's spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the College.
York College's spring commencement will be held at 10:30 a.m. on campus. Approximately 600 students are eligible to receive degrees. Ann Roth of Hanover, an Oscar award-winning costume designer, will also receive an honorary degree. She won an Oscar for her designs in “The English Patient.”
Goodling has represented the residents of Adams, Cumberland and York Counties in Pennsylvania's 19th District since 1974. He has served thirteen straight terms, the longest tenure of any 19th District representative this century. He plans to retire after his current term ends in 2001.
The congressman has been an active member of the Committee on Education and Labor since his first term, becoming Chairman of the Committee in 1994. He is also a member of the House Committee on International Relations and the Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights.
Goodling began his career in education. He graduated from York High School in 1945. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and a Master's degree in education from Western Maryland College. He became principal of West York Area High School in 1957 and Superintendent of Schools for the Spring Grove Area School District in 1967.
