DJ'S STAY ON THE AIR FOR 52 HOURS, RAISE MONEY FOR MUSIC EDUCATION

York, Pennsylvania--At 9:01 p.m. yesterday, York College of Pennsylvania students Mary Tricario and Justin Ayala erupted in laughter, smiles and hugs despite their bodies' long plea for rest. They had just broken a Guinness World Record for the longest disc jockey marathon ever at 50 hours and 1 minute, and they were going for more.

Two hours and three minutes later, their weekend of record spinning, game playing and caffeine drinking was finally over. Their mission of raising money and awareness for music education in public schools continues, however. Tricario and her staff at “The Freak Show,” a weekly program on York College's WVYC (99.7 FM), are asking students, friends and members of the general public to donate money to VH1's “Save the Music” fund.

So far, Tricario and her staff have raised $200 for “Save the Music,” and they have set a conservative goal of $500. Persons wanting to contribute to the fund can send a check to Save the Music, c/o WVYC-FM, York College of Pennsylvania, York PA 17405.

To officially break the record, according to guidelines in the 1999 Guinness book, the students could not sleep, and they could only leave the radio station for five minutes each hour. The entire marathon was videotaped in order to meet another Guinness requirement.
