York College Students Build Workplace Devices for Shadowfax

York, Pennsylvania--More than 20 York College engineering students are preparing for next week's final exam, but none of them are studying. Instead, the students are placing the finishing touches on innovative devices that will aid the disabled individuals working at the Shadowfax Corporation in York.

For the second consecutive year, Dr. Douglas Walcerz's students have been assigned this creative community service project as their semester project and final exam. The students will present the devices to the Shadowfax Corporation on Tuesday, May 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the organization's production facility at 386 Pattison Street in York.

Individuals who participate in Shadowfax's day vocational program complete routine production tasks for Shadowfax's customers, which include Harley Davidson, ESAB, and GAIA Enterprises. York College engineering students can make the tasks simpler and easier by applying their knowledge and skills and creating unique fixtures, devices and alignment tools.

One group of students has created a device that will make it much easier for the workers to remove stickers from spools. Another group has designed a cutting device that will be able to quickly cut rolls of rubber roofing into a specific size. Six other devices will also be presented.

Shadowfax is a private, nonprofit organization that helps individuals who have a disability acquire job skills. All workers at the facility are paid and are encouraged to seek future employment in a competitive work environment.
