Kids' Inquiry Conference to be held at York College May 30
York, Pennsylvania--York College of Pennsylvania and the Elementary Science Integration Project will host the Kids' Inquiry Conference 2000 on Tuesday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at York College. More than 150 elementary school children from Baltimore and Carroll County, MD and York County, PA will learn about the wonders of science through hands-on activities, student presentations, and interaction with York College students and professors.
The goal of the Kids' Inquiry Conference, or KIC, is to have children view science as a dynamic force in their lives. The program is designed to be similar to an actual scientific conference and includes the following activities: presentation sessions in which students share their own research and learn about the research of others, science-related tours, interactive exhibits, and opening and closing comments by York College professors.
The annual highlight of KIC is the interactive science exhibit created by Dr. Bill Kreiger, professor of physical science at York College. Kreiger and his college students show the children how science is both educational and fun. They use hands-on workstations to teach such topics as the seasons, stars, rocks, minerals and sundials.
This is the fifth annual KIC held at York College. The following schools will be participating in this year's event: Manchester Elementary School from Carroll County, MD; Wellwood International School from Baltimore County, MD; and York Township School from York County, PA.
The Elementary Science Integration Project (ESIP) was founded in 1990 at the University of Maryland with the purpose of teaching children authentic science through child-centered and inquiry-based activities.
