York College Cultural Series Celebrates Latin America

Events Begin Oct. 1 with Tango Dancing and Art Exhibit
York, Pennsylvania--York College of Pennsylvania will host ten major events during the 2000-2001 academic year that showcase Latin American culture. This year's Cultural Series, "A Celebration of Latin America," will feature art exhibits, lectures, Latin American dancing and more. All of the events are free and open to the public.
The highlight of the series will be a speech by Oscar Arias, the former President of Costa Rica and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. The lecture will be held on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Wolf Gymnasium.
The Cultural Series begins on Oct. 1 with tango dancing and an art exhibit and ends on April 2 with a panel discussion on Hispanic culture and healthcare. Following is a calendar of events:
Oct. 1-29, Latin American Art Exhibit (MAC Center) The Galleries at York College present a selection of 40 works on loan from the collection of the Inter-American Development Bank.
Oct. 1 & 2, "Tango Times!" (Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. and Oct. 2 at 12:30 p.m., both in MAC Recital Hall) This musical dance performance illustrates the history of the tango and the instruments that became intrinsic to its style of music and dance.
Oct. 5, Chamba Francisco Acosta, "Activism through Multimedia" (7 p.m., MAC Recital Hall) Originally from El Salvador, Mr. Acosta combines his extensive experience in photography, sound, video, music and computers in his fascinating multimedia works.
Oct. 7, Soccer Match (10:30 a.m., York College Soccer Field) Two Hispanic teams from York's White Rose Men's Soccer League will compete in a match.
*Oct. 18, Oscar Arias (7:30 p.m., Wolf Gymnasium) Former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Laureate Oscar Arias shares his ideas of human development, global governance and human security.
Nov. 13, Hank Steinbrecher (7 p.m., MAC Recital Hall) The secretary general of the United States Soccer Federation talks about the most popular sport in Latin America and how soccer has bridged the cultural gap between those countries and the United States.
Jan. 31-Feb. 3, YCP Players Production of "Spirit of Hispania" (8 p.m. each evening, DeMeester Theater) This comedy-drama by Jules Tasca includes five short plays that explore Latin American mythology for all ages and cultures.
March 11-15, A Latin American Film Festival ("Four Days in September," March 11; "El Mariachi," March 13; and "Like Water for Chocolate," March 15; all at 7:30 p.m. in DeMeester Theater)
March 28, Rick Darke Presents Roberto Burle Marx: The Artist and the Amazon (7:30 p.m. in DeMeester Theater) Mr. Darke is an author, photographer, lecturer and landscape design consultant specializing in regional landscapes around the world. This dual image presentation will explore the legacy of Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, who forever changed the way we see and garden with tropical plants.
April 2, Hispanic Culture and Healthcare: At Home and Abroad (7 p.m., Alumni Hall) This panel presentation will be led by three local healthcare experts who have traveled to Latin America to offer their expertise: Kim Green of York Hospital, John Henkle, and Ruth Davis of Millersville University.
