"Tango Times!" Kicks Off Latin American Cultural Series
York, Pennsylvania--Cygnus Chamber Music International will present "Tango Times!" in an energy-filled performance at York College on Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. in MAC Recital Hall. The event marks the beginning of this year's cultural series, "A Celebration of Latin America."
"Tango Times!" demonstrates, at an exciting pace, the history of the tango genre through narration, music and dance. The performance is free and open to the public.
"Tango Times!" will be performed by José Cueto, violin; Raúl Jaurena, bandoneón; Nancy Roldán, piano; Fiona Thompson, violoncello; Risa Carlson, guitar; Frank Carnovale, double-bass; Tino and Susan, dance; and Gabriella Cavallero, narrator.
Background: The traditional song, music and dance of the tango originated around the turn of the century in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the once strong Spanish culture was soon displaced by European settlers. Italians, French, Germans, Russians and many others sang memories of lives and loved ones left behind to form what would become known as the Argentine Tango. The tango's tragic spirit was absorbed by Spanish culture as nomads known as gauchos moved from one province to the next. The gauchos joined the Europeans in song, and soon the tango became a remedy for their sorrow. As the tango gained international appeal, sung interpretations gave way to more dancing and music with typical tango orchestras and soloists. After a time of increased exposure, the tango lost public interest. Today, however, this poetic song and dance enjoys renewed international popularity.
