The Group Brings a Fresh, Innovative Approach to Classical Music

York, Pennsylvania--The Cypress String Quartet will perform its 2000-2001 repertoire at York College of Pennsylvania on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in MAC Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The San Francisco-based group will perform the works of such composers as Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Stravinsky, along with many others. Members of the Cypress String Quartet include Cecily Ward and Tom Stone, violins; Ann Gregg, viola; and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello.

Background: The Cypress String Quartet was formed in 1996 and has since matured into a nationally acclaimed ensemble. The Quartet was recently nominated "Debut Artist of the Year" by National Public Radio's "Performance Today." The young musicians' contemporary flare, paired with their fresh and bold approach, truly bring the time-honored works of Bach and Beethoven to life.

The Cypress String Quartet is committed to performance and education. During the 1999-2000 season, the group launched its innovative Call & Response series in San Francisco, integrating performance and outreach through the commission of new works. In past seasons the Quartet has established a community residency in Oregon and has presented programs to over 3,000 students in the Philadelphia area under the auspices of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
