The P.R.I.D.E. Conference Will Promote Fun, Educational Activities
York, Pennsylvania--York College will host the third annual P.R.I.D.E. conference on Nov. 10. P.R.I.D.E., or Partnerships Responsive to Individual Development and Education for children, teaches after school program directors about character development and hands-on learning opportunities that are available for their students.
The goal of P.R.I.D.E. is for after school programs to develop educational and character building programs that utilize existing community resources. This year, the after school program directors will actively participate in the lessons that have been created for school-aged children. The directors will then be encouraged to develop a partnership with the people and organizations that provide those activities.
P.R.I.D.E. will present at least three different activities that are available to after school programs. York College professor William Kreiger will demonstrate his now-famous hands-on science activities. Paula Gilbert, director of Martin Children's Library, will present a variety of programs offered at the Library, including cyber camp, story time and "virtual voyages." Tom Glover and Rick Williams of the Boy Scouts will introduce the organization's "Learning for Life" program, which promotes character development.
Many of the leading youth advocate agencies in the York community will participate in the P.R.I.D.E. conference. Representatives from the following organizations plan to attend: American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Child Care Consultants, South George Street Community Partnership, York Spanish American Center, York City Recreation and Parks, YMCA and YWCA.
The P.R.I.D.E. conference is tentatively scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10. Media members are encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact John Ertter, York College News Bureau Editor, at (717) 815-1309.
