York County Students to Learn about First Aid, Exercise
York, Pennsylvania--York College nursing students in Dr. Elaine Feeney's community health nursing class aren't waiting until after they graduate to put their knowledge to good use. In late October and early November, students in the class will share first aid techniques and exercise tips with elementary school students in York County.
The community health nursing class, a regular course offering, allows students to gain experience outside of the classroom while helping members of the community. Last fall, nursing students conducted a program on back safety for men working at the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. This year, students have decided to teach lessons to the youngest generation that can help extend lives and even save them.
On Oct. 31, three York College nursing students will visit a sixth grade class at North Salem Elementary School in the Dover School District. They will teach the children techniques to prevent choking (the Heimlich maneuver) and how to call for help using the 911 system.
"This type of project benefits both the community and the students," said Dr. Feeney, assistant professor of nursing. "The community benefits in that their needs are assessed and beginning steps are taken to meet those needs; our students benefit in that they learn how to conduct these aggregate-based interventions and how to evaluate their effectiveness."
In November, nursing students will visit Roundtown Elementary School and Gettysburg Middle School to teach children about health, nutrition and exercise.
