York, Pennsylvania--York College's Sigma Iota Epsilon (SIE) business honors fraternity was named "Chapter of the Year" for 1999-2000 by the SIE national organization. The honors fraternity competed against more than 50 chapters nationwide for this distinction.
York College's SIE chapter, Epsilon Omega, was founded in 1995 and now has nearly 40 active members. The chapter received this year's award due to the size and participation of its membership, its service to the community, and its academic contributions to the College.
"The key was our diversity of activities and our growing presence on campus," said Becky Smith, the chapter's advisor and a professor of business.
During the past year, SIE conducted a fundraiser for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and sponsored Alcohol Awareness Week. The group also supported a needy child during the holiday season and actively participated in the College's "Adopt-A-Block" program. In addition to community service activities, the group brings business leaders to campus for lectures and discussions about the changing business world and offers free tutoring to business students.
In order to qualify for membership in SIE, undergraduate business majors must attain at least 30 credits and a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. Graduate students must attain at least 9 credits and a minimum G.P.A. of 3.25. Additionally, applicants must submit an essay about how they plan to contribute to the community and the business program.
