Posted January 15, 2001FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania--The spirited musical group "Pan's Fancy" of Philadelphia will perform at York College on Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in MAC Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
"Pan's Fancy" plays music from the years 1450 to 1800 on recorders, lutes, bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. The group's two members, Edwin George and Karen Meyers, have been writing and performing arrangements of renaissance, colonial and traditional music since the early 1980s. They have released two compact discs, "Pan's Fancy, Their First" and "Pan's Fancy, Their Second."
The group has performed at a variety of regional venues and events, including Longwood Gardens, the Baltimore Folk Music Society, the Lancaster Arts Festival and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Background: Edwin George took up the bagpipes when he was twelve and has been torturing his neighbors ever since. During college, he became interested in historical woodwinds. To his surprise, people began paying him to play them, and thus he has not had to work for a living. He has recorded for Dorian Records with the Baltimore Consort.
Karen Meyers played the lute for many years, touring as a soloist, performing with early music ensembles, and remaining on good terms with her landlords until she took up the hurdy-gurdy in order to make as much noise as Edwin George. She has recorded for Newport Classics and is the editor of the Lute Society of America's teaching anthology.
