Lecture Series and Exhibit to Explore Native American Culture

York, Pennsylvania--York College's Schmidt Library will host a lecture series and an exhibit on Native American culture during the first half of April. All of the events are free and open to the public.
"First Nations, First Cultures" will include five lectures and an exhibition of artifacts and contemporary pieces from the Indian Steps Museum. The exhibit may be viewed in Schmidt Library's Special Collections Room April 2 to 16, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., or by appointment. The Indian Steps Museum, located in Airville, Pa., received its name from the "steps" carved into the nearby Susquehanna River rocks by local Indians, who used the footholds while shad fishing.
The lecture series will feature indigenous peoples and visiting professors and will also be held in the Special Collections Room of Schmidt Library. Following is a schedule of events:
April 2 at 3 p.m. Craig A. Ilgenfritz, Ph.D., presents "The Steps: The Museum Heads into its Next Hundred Years."
April 3 at 3:30 p.m. Frank J. Pucci, Ph.D., presents "Indian Gambling: Good, Bad or Indifferent."
April 4 at 3 p.m. Frank Little Bear speaks of Native American art.
April 5 at 2 p.m. Winona Stevens Lawson Sweet presents "My Life and My Beliefs: A View on My Duty to Inform People about Native American Culture and the Need for its Preservation."
April 6 at 3 p.m. Karenne Wood speaks of Native American literature.
