Former Yorker and Comptroller of the Currency Will Be the Guest Speaker

York, Pennsylvania--Eugene A. Ludwig, the former Comptroller of the Currency and a York Suburban High School graduate, will present the Henry Schmidt Memorial Lecture on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in York College's MAC Recital Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

York College established the lecture series in 1979 in honor of the late Henry D. Schmidt, a former York business leader and entrepreneur. The lectures focus on the American free enterprise system. Past speakers include former President Gerald Ford, William F. Buckley and Ben Cohen of "Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream."

In 1993, Ludwig became the 27th Comptroller of the Currency. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) supervises nearly 3,300 federally chartered commercial banks. The banks supervised by the OCC account for approximately 57 percent of the assets of the commercial banking system.

After completing his five-year term in 1998, Ludwig became a vice chairman and senior control officer with Bankers Trust Corporation/Deutsche Bank. He now serves as the managing partner of Promontory Financial Group, LLC, a newly formed merchant bank based in Washington, D.C. He is also an active board member of Get America Working, a nonprofit organization focused on creating innovative solutions to joblessness in America.

Ludwig grew up in York, Pa. and attended York Suburban High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Haverford College and later attended Oxford University, where he studied politics, philosophy, and economics and received a bachelor and master's degree. He also holds an LL.B. from Yale University. Prior to joining the OCC, Ludwig was a partner at the law firm of Covington and Burling in Washington, D.C.
