Germany's Ambassador to the U.S. to Speak at Spring Commencement

York, Pennsylvania--Germany's Ambassador to the U.S., Jürgen Chrobog, will deliver the commencement address at York College of Pennsylvania's graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 12. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the College.

York College's spring commencement will be held at 10:30 a.m. on campus. Approximately 600 students are eligible to receive degrees.

Shirley D. Shipley, vice president of Shipley Energy, will also receive an honorary degree. A York resident since 1957, Shipley is a business leader, community volunteer and former educator. She is a member of the board of trustees of York College and serves as chairperson of the board's education committee.

Chrobog, 61, entered foreign service in 1972 and has performed a wide range of senior level duties. He received Germany's ambassadorial post in the United States in April of 1995.

In 1991, Chrobog became political director of the German Foreign Office in Bonn. As head of the Political Directorate-General, his responsibilities included the Western European Union, the Atlantic Alliance and defense, and relations with the United Nations, Europe, North America and the former Soviet Union.

From 1984 to 1991, Chrobog was spokesman and head of the Foreign Office's press division, and he also led the Office of the Foreign Minister during the last two of those years. In 1983, he became deputy spokesman of the German Foreign Office.

Ambassador Chrobog and his wife, Magda Gohar-Chrobog, have three children.
