Nursing Department to Celebrate 20th Anniversary Sept. 22

York, Pennsylvania—The York College Department of Nursing will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an all-day alumni gathering on Saturday, Sept. 22. Many former students will get their first look at the two-year-old McKay Nursing Education Center.
The Department of Nursing graduated its first class in 1981 after York Hospital began to phase out its program in the late 1970s. The York College nursing program now has 1,484 alumni. More than 40 percent of those graduates are now practicing as nurses within the state of Pennsylvania.
After having its facilities located on the third floor of the Life-Science Building for many years, the Department of Nursing moved into the state-of-the-art McKay Nursing Education Center on Grantley Road in the fall of 1999. The Nursing Education Center includes realistic and interactive labs for each clinical course, multiple classrooms and a computer center. The nursing program's enrollment for the fall semester is 391.
The anniversary celebration will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Music, Art and Communications Center with a continental breakfast. At 9 a.m., Nursing Department Chairperson Jacquelin Harrington will welcome an expected 100 to 150 nursing graduates back to York College.
Highlighting the event will be a presentation by Melodie Chenevert from 9:15 a.m. to 12 noon titled "Nursing: Yesterday, Today and Forever." Chenevert is the director of PRO-NURSE, a company which sells products designed to increase nursing pride and productivity. She has authored educational and inspirational books for practicing nurses, nursing students and children.
Alumni will tour the McKay Nursing Education Center and watch a slide presentation from 2 to 2:45 p.m. The program will end at 4 p.m. after class photos are taken.
