Posted October 17, 2001FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania—York College nursing students will gain real-world experience while providing valuable health information to elderly and disabled York residents by operating the new Wellness Center at the Broad Park Manor apartment complex. A grand opening celebration at the Broad Park Manor Wellness Center will be held on Monday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Wellness Center is a community partnership between the York College Nursing Department and the York Housing Authority. Representatives from both York College and the York Housing Authority will speak at the grand opening celebration. The Wellness Center is funded through a competitive grant provided to the York Housing Authority from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Broad Park Manor residents are elderly and/or disabled.
The Broad Park Manor Wellness Center is located at 449 E. King St., Apartment 4, in York. The Wellness Center is a one-bedroom apartment that includes a consultation room, waiting room, kitchen and storage facility.
During the fall semester, 18 senior nursing students enrolled in the course "Community Health Nursing Practice" will work at the Wellness Center for eight hours per week. Nine students will work at a time, with six of those students making home visits.
The York College nursing students will regularly conduct wellness and prevention programs on such topics as diet, exercise and safety. The nursing students will also meet with residents one-on-one to assess their healthcare needs and, if necessary, make referrals to local health agencies and physicians. The Wellness Center will only provide health and safety information; the nursing students will not distribute medications or provide physical treatments.
In order to meet graduation requirements, all York College nursing students must gain clinical experience in a variety of settings including a community setting.
