Social Capital Conference to Be Held Dec. 7; Students to Present Findings

York, Pennsylvania—York College of Pennsylvania will host a conference on social capital and race relations in York County on Friday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. York College and Penn State York students will present research findings on recently collected data, and panelists representing six local organizations will discuss the results of those studies on social and racial trust.
The event is sponsored by York College's Behavioral Sciences Department. The conference is free and open to the public.
York College and Penn State York students will present research findings on data from the Social Capital Benchmark Survey sponsored by the York Foundation, and the York County Race Relations Study sponsored by The York Dispatch and WHTM-TV 27.
The conference will begin at 1 p.m. in Alumni Hall (located in the Iosue Student Union) with an introduction to the concept of social capital and an explanation of the conference format. From 1:15 to 2 p.m., students will display their research findings using poster presentations. The "best of student research" will be presented from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in three, 25-minute sessions.
A panel discussion about the research findings on race relations will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in DeMeester Theater (located in the Life Science Building). The discussion will feature six panelists: Gary Bittner, associate professor of sociology at York College; Don Gogniat, campus executive officer of Penn State York; Stan Hough, editor of The York Dispatch; Mike Jefferson, employment director of the Crispus Attucks Community Center; Alex Ramos, executive director of the Spanish American Center; and York College student Bryan Wade, host of the television program "World's Apart."
