FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

York College of Pennsylvania recently learned that students enrolled in the institution's teacher Education program were ranked in the top grouping of colleges and universities according to data released by the U.S. Department of Education.

York College education majors passed the national Praxis exam, indicating teacher preparedness, by an astonishing 95% pass rate. York College had one of the larger classes of students, 115, to take the exam in 1999-2000.

After Congress voiced concern about teacher preparation, it passed Title II of the Higher Education Act which requires new accountability measures including reporting requirements on teacher preparation programs in each state.

The Praxis exam is a national test mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, which oversees teacher preparation programs at 92 institutions of higher education in the state. York's success rate placed it in elite company with institutions such as Bucknell University, Lehigh University, Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania.

York's 95% pass rate also placed it above many regional institutions.

"The results are indicative of the strength of our faculty and program and the quality of the students that we have," said Dr. Anthony Fredericks, chairman of the Department of Education.
