Robots Invade York College
Posted June 11, 2002FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania -- Many kids just want to have fun during the summer, while their parents want the learning process to continue. Both goals can be accomplished during a Robo Camp at York College. It's for students in grades six through nine and will take place June 17-21.
Participants will learn to work as a team to solve a problem through the use of a LEGO kit, which includes a programmable device. Though robots are the lure for the camp, students will actually be learning various math and science technologies, according to Dr. Jim Kearns, Associate Professor of Physical Science. He says the teams will build robots for daily competition. Students from nine different local school districts will be represented at the camp.
Leroy Keeney, Director of Special Programs at York College, says "This educational activity is designed to create excitement on the part of students for the field of science. This is not a play experience, but a learning experience."
The York College Engineering/Special Programs Department recently received a "Stay Invent the Future" grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, which will enhance the camp. It will run, each day, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information call Dr. Kearns at (717) 815-1522.
