FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

York, Pennsylvania-- In an effort to try to keep more young people in the local work force, York College of Pennsylvania has launched a new, innovative program. The York Future Leaders Program is designed to educate students about the excellent job potential in South Central Pennsylvania. The idea is also intended to show young people that the area is a great place to stay and build a future.

Joseph Merkle, Dean of Student Affairs, says the York Future Leaders Program will help urban youth graduate from high school and connect them directly with York area employers. For those seeking further education, scholarship assistance will be provided to attend York College. The bottom line, according to Dean Merkle, is that the program will create a new talent pool in the region.

Maylene Fuentes of York is one of the participants. She graduated from William Penn High School and is currently a senior at York College, majoring in Sociology. As a program mentor, she is now helping other high school students. Ms. Fuentes is also President of the York College chapter of UNITY.

The York Future Leaders Program is a partnership involving many local business and civic leaders, Crispus Attucks Community Center and the College. Dean Merkle says it will be a model for other schools throughout the Commonwealth to follow. The program is made possible by the "Stay Invent the Future Challenge Grants" from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
