New College-in-High-School Program at YCP

York, Pennsylvania -- Some high school students earn higher education credit by taking courses at a college. But, in an effort to help students feel more comfortable about the experience, York College of Pennsylvania has taken it one step further. YCP has met with great success in the initial stages of its "College-in-High-School" program. The concept is designed to introduce advanced seniors in high school to the demands of college, while remaining in the familiar surroundings of their own school. Participants may earn up to six college credits. Currently, classes in English are offered, but Dr. Frank Mussano, Dean of Administrative Services at York College, says History, Math, and Psychology are all on the drawing board.
According to Leroy Keeney, Director of Special Programs at York College, the concept began two years ago, when YCP was approached by the Conewago School District. YCP trained a New Oxford High School English teacher for the program. There are now 40 students participating, each having met various program requirements. They're considered part-time York College students with all the privileges associated with that status. They must earn a "C" or better in the fall semester to be eligible to enroll in the spring. There is a $100 tuition fee, which covers administrative costs.
