The Forgotten Theater
Posted March 25, 2003FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania -- If you like U.S. military history, then you may want to stop by York College of Pennsylvania for an exhibit titled "World War II's Forgotten Theater: Remembering Our China-Burma-India Veterans. Local vets who served in China, Burma and India are lending mementos, photographs, documents, and equipment for the display.
When Japanese Imperial armies tried to control Southeast Asia, from 1942-1945, American and British units were sent in to help. Allied soldiers, including the famous 'Flying Tigers,' fought to open a road thorugh India and Burma. This became the only route available to China for supplies, food, and medicine. Soldiers endured not only the dangers of battle, but the horrendous jungle terrain, tigers, monsoons, and extreme heat. Since many of their orders were kept secret during the war, this area was known as "The Forgotten Theater."
The exhibit begins April 9 and continues through May 9, in Schmidt Library's Archives and Special Collections Room. For more information please call 815-1439.
