York College's Six-Legged Robot
Posted March 28, 2003FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania -- What has six legs, weighs more than 200 pounds, and is on its way from Pennsylvania to Mexico? The answer ... a robot built by a group of mechanical engineering students at York College. The project is part of the Walking Machine Challenge, which promotes the field of robotics to students around the world. It's run by the Society of Automotive Engineers. YCP's robot and students are competing against other colleges at the Universidad de LaSalle in Mexico City.
Six YCP students built the robot as part of their senior year engineering design project. The walking machine consists of six independent, pneumatically controlled legs that are attached to a solid frame. The legs are controlled by a central programmable unit. The students and Dr. Jim Kearns, Associate Professor of Physical Science, left York College today for the competition in Mexico City. For more information, please contact Randy Gray in the York College PR office at 815-1309.

Media note: Dr. Kearns and the students will invite reporters to York College to see the robot when they return from Mexico.
