Engineering Students Help Shadowfax
Posted May 7, 2003FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania -- A guillotine cutter and a heat shrink oven are among the newest inventions York College engineering students have developed to help disabled workers at the Shadowfax Corporation in York.
More than 20 students in an Engineering Practice and Design Studio class worked on six different devices as part of a community service project for their final exam. The students will present their inventions to representatives of Shadowfax on Monday, May 12, at the organization's facility at 149 South Tremont Street in York. There will be two presentations; the first will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The second will be from 10:30 to noon.
Workers who participate in Shadowfax's vocational program complete routine production tasks for the organization's clients, which include local manufacturing companies such as Harley-Davidson. In years past, York College engineering students have made some of the tasks easier by creating custom-built fixtures, devices, and tools. Shadowfax is a private, nonprofit organization that enables persons with disabilities to learn new job skills.
Reporters and photographers are encouraged to attend the presentations. For more information about the presentations, you may call Randy Gray in the York College PR Office, at 815-1309.
