Summer Book Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

York, Pennsylvania - Students entering their freshman year at York College of Pennsylvania are doing more than hanging out at the pool this summer...they're reading! It's all part of the fourth annual "Summer Book Project." A diverse group of York College faculty members and students reviewed numerous books and selected one for incoming freshmen to read prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

The choice was a non fiction work entitled Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic, written by John de Graaf, David Wann, and Thomas Naylor. The book uses the whimsical metaphor of a flu-like illness to show serious symptoms and cures of obsessive materialism. Students are asked to consider several points including:

  • Are people too materialistic?
  • What do you own that you would be unwilling to give up?
  • How does what you see on TV influence what you buy?

Students and faculty will meet over lunch at the College on Sunday, August 24 to discuss Affluenza. For more information you may call Dr. William T. Bogart, Dean of Academic Affairs at York College at (717) 815-1231.
