Cultural Series: Infinite in All Directions
Posted August 11, 2003FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania -- This year's cultural series at York College of Pennsylvania is out of this world! We've got a little something for all who occasionally find themselves looking up at the stars and wondering what's out there. The series, titled "Infinite In All Directions," blasts off when former astronaut Sally Ride comes to campus. She was America's first woman in space and is now an author, a professor of physics at the University of California, and the winner of numerous honors, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service. Her lecture is scheduled for Monday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Wolf Gym A.
The next "cosmic" event to land at the College will be an art exhibit from the famous Dutchman M.C. Escher. The graphic artist (1898-1972) spent his life exploring the idea of expressing infinity. The art show runs from September 17 to November 1 in the York College Galleries, and includes a curator's lecture (9/17) and a gallery lecture (10/22). Both of these begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the MAC Recital Hall.
Other acts of infinite proportion coming to YCP include illusionist Mike Super and astronomer John Wood. Super is considered one of the top magicians in America. Dr. Wood is an optical engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. He'll be talking about his work on the Hubble Space Telescope. For those of you who like science fiction movies, we'll be showing some classics including, Dune (September 21), Fantasia (October 19), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (November 16). All films begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be shown in DeMeester Theater.
