York, Pennsylvania -- York College of Pennsylvania has honored a local resident by naming a special award after her. For many years Mrs. Josephine "Jody" Schmidt Appell has performed community service deeds throughout York County. She has served as President of the Dallastown Area School Board, President of the York Foundation Board, President of the Junior League Board, and President of the YWCA to name a few. Mrs. Appell says, "I'm thrilled about this honor. I've found that the more you give, the more you get back."

The York College Community Service Award is presented annually to the two student organizations which have contributed most significantly to the community through volunteer service. Competing groups make formal presentations of their community service programs, volunteer activities, and charitable work. A panel of Student Senate members selects the winners. Also new this year is a financial award. The first place organization will receive $250. The group coming in second will get $100.
