Construction Update
Posted August 26, 2003FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York, Pennsylvania -- Sounds of hammering, sawing and other construction work continue to emanate from the campus of York College of Pennsylvania, which is undergoing a $70 million expansion project. This is the most ambitious capital development program undertaken since York Junior College bought the old Out Door Country Club in 1958. In the next several years YCP will double its size.
As part of the "West Campus" expansion, a new recreation and athletic complex is being built, as are new office buildings and dorms. The residential units can be seen going up along Richland Avenue and should be ready by August 24. Groundbreaking for the athletic facility is set to begin next February and take about 18 months to complete. From an environmental point it should be noted that the expansion involves the reuse of old building materials following the razing of the former Teledyne-McKay plant. Most of these materials would have ended up in the landfill.
Also on the drawing board, the main campus will be enhanced with an improved Schmidt Library which is being turned into a tech-savvy information access facility with digital scanning and various other upgrades. This project will begin next summer and take three months to complete. Meantime, a state-of-the-art humanities and social sciences center, complete with an 855-seat theater, will be located in the current Wolf Gym. Work on that is scheduled to begin in about a year and will take approximately six months to complete.
A fund-raising effort, launched earlier this year, is aimed at generating $16 million toward the cost of the expansion and renovation plan. If you'd like more details on York College's Capital Campaign and/or the entire project you may call Randy Gray in the P-R Office to arrange an interview with President George Waldner.
