The Habitat Hoopsters, York’s newest and most eclectic sports team, are making their debut this month in an event sure to amaze and amuse. High-flying slam dunks, dazzling ball-handling tricks and hilarious comedy are just the beginning of an evening of family fun as the Hoopsters take on the internationally-acclaimed Harlem Ambassadors who are famous for their unique brand of Harlem-style basketball.
The hoopla begins at 7 p.m. March 25, at the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. Mayor Kim Bracey, Commissioners Steve Chronister and Chris Reilly, and former Congressman Todd Platts will play alongside Habitat homeowners and athletes from York College and several local school districts. The Ambassadors feature non-stop laughs and deliver a positive message for kids. They invite as many kids as they can to come sit on the bench, have a front row seat during the show, and get involved in all of the fun. After the game, they can get autographs and pictures with the players.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the York Habitat for Humanity Building on Faith 2013 project: construction of a new duplex on South Albemarle St.; and York College’s Habitat Campus Chapter’s rehab of a home on West Jackson Street.
Idelisse Cordero and her four children, aged 4-17, are the future homeowners of one of the S. Albemarle St. home. The future homeowners of the W. Jackson St. home are Ashley Cruz and her six year old son. Both of these future homeowners will be part of the Habitat Hoopsters team as they try to keep up with the crazy antics that the Harlem Ambassadors bring to the court.
