A York College class and students in a York after-school program have come together to create a community service project. The result of that collaboration is a Round Robin basketball tournament that will be held from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., May 1, at The Salvation Army of York, 50 East King Street. The event is open to participants of all ages free of charge.

The Salvation Army youth and staff, along with York College basketball players and students, will participate. Money raised from donations and a bake sale will be donated to Veteran's Helping Hand, a local nonprofit serving homeless Veterans.

The 21 York College students in Assistant Professor of Human Services Robyn Maitoza’s Research Methods class have been meeting with eight students, primarily sixth – eighth graders – in the after-school program throughout the semester. “I have had small groups of my students rotate to visit with the youth over the semester,” she said. “It’s been a really neat project for everyone involved.”

The students from the after-school program will visit campus on April 22 for a tour and activities with Maitoza’s students.
