Spring Commencement

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.)

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) will deliver the address during York College’s commencement exercises at 10:15 a.m., May 12, on the campus mall. He will receive an honorary doctorate of laws, and H. Douglas Campbell Jr., who is retiring from the College’s board of trustees, will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters during the event.

Tickets will be required for seating under the tent, where the ceremony is held. A live video stream of commencement will begin at 10 a.m. EST.

Since joining the Senate in January, Toomey has distinguished himself as a leader on economic, financial services and budgetary issues, striving to restore fiscal discipline to Washington and economic opportunity for all Americans. Among other things, he has introduced a 10-year balanced budget proposal that received more votes in the Senate than any other budget plan this year, and he has successfully helped cut federal red tape for local communities and job creators in Pennsylvania.

Toomey serves on the Budget, Banking, Commerce, and Joint Economic committees. He also is the ranking member on the Commerce Committee's Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance Subcommittee. He previously served on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction.

A Harvard University graduate, Toomey previously served in Congress as a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 15th Congressional District, where he championed economic growth and fiscal discipline. In fulfillment of his three-term pledge, he retired from the House in 2004.

In addition to his public service, Toomey has also served as president of the Club for Growth, owned and operated a small restaurant chain in the Lehigh Valley, and worked in the financial services industry.

Douglas Campbell A graduate of York Country Day School and York Junior College, Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University. He purchased Wrightsville’s historic Accomac Inn in 1971 and continues to serve as the owner of the Inn as well as of Accomac Events and Whispering Pines Banquet Hall in Carlisle. Campbell has been involved professionally in food service for more than 40 years.

An active and involved community member, he has served as a member of the York College Board of Trustees and as secretary of the Board. He earned an Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College in 1992.

Campbell also serves or has served on the boards of several other organizations in his native York County, including The ARC of York County, the Small Enterprise Development Corporation, The Historical Society of York County, and the York County Heritage Trust. He is a past director of the Southern Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Restaurant Association, the York County Chamber of Commerce, the York County Community Foundation, the York County Farm and Natural Lands Trust, and the York County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
