York County Academy
  • 1776-1787 - A small classical school founded by the Reverend John Andrews becomes incorporated as The York Academy within St. John's Episcopal Church, York, Pa.
  • 1798 - The Classical School for Young Ladies begins.  It remains in operation until 1871 when it closes due to the difficulties of offering separate classes for girls. 
  • 1799 - The York County Academy becomes independently incorporated.
  • 1858 - A Normal School opens within the Academy to educate future teachers.  It remains in operation until 1921.
  • 1929 - A reciprocal teaching agreement begins with York Collegiate Institute
York Collegiate Institute/York Junior College
  • 1873 - York Collegiate Institute  founded by local businessman, Samuel Small.
  • 1885 - Institute building destroyed by a fire.
  • 1886 - New building opens through the patronage of Small's three nephews.
  • 1941 - York Junior College of the York Collegiate Institute begins offering freshman and sophomore college classes.
  • 1948 - The secondary school closes.
  • 1961 - York Junior College moves to new campus on Country Club Rd.
  • 1968 - The junior college is renamed York College of Pennsylvania and offers four-year degree programs.
York College of Pennsylvania
  • 1975 - The college merges with York Country Day School.  Teaching affiliations begin with York Hospital.
  • 1977 - The first graduate program begins offering courses in business administration.
  • 1980s - The college is nationally recognized for its ability to provide a quality education at a reasonable price.
  • 1990s - Renovation and new buildings enhance the college's philosophy of excellence in education.
