Finding Articles using Schmidt Library
Basics
There
are several ways to find articles in the Schmidt Library. Sometimes
you will find a link to a full-text article in a database. Sometimes you will discover that the library owns a physical copy of the periodical that you can copy. Sometimes you will
only find a citation (What
is a citation?). If the library does not own or have access to
an article and you may request it through document delivery.
From
the Schmidt Library
home page, click on Finder in
the left-hand navigation menu. Choose Find Articles . From there you can find ways to
search for journal or newspaper articles using: Links to all the
library's online periodical indexes
Links to electronic journals and other full-text sources
From
the Find Articles page, click on Our Journals List to access
a searchable database of the library's periodical holdings. Search
here to see if the library owns or has access to a journal title.
Click Subject Guides:
Recommended periodical indexes for that topic area
A list of the library's periodical subscriptions for that field
Subject-related electronic journals
And more!
"As a professor in a traditional liberal arts field, I always enjoy the experience of searching through a library archive or perusing a shelf of the latest journals and coming across something unexpected. At the same time, having so much information available at your fingertips and on your computer screen is remarkable and makes searches from home easy. I am currently working on a book project and have had to make extensive use of Schmidt Library’s online resources for newspapers, magazines, and journal articles. From the comfort of my home office, I’ve been able to find and download articles from the New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, The Journal of Philosophy, and many other resources. I’ve been both surprised and pleased at the amount of information now easily available through the Library’s web site. It won’t keep me from visiting the Library regularly, but it sure is nice having all this access.."

"Just
as improvements in transportation have changed the perception
of distance, so have advancements in information technology
changed the perception of time. Places and events
that formerly seemed far away in distance and time now
appear to be closer at hand. This leads to the increased
interconnectedness among countries around the world that
is often referred to as globalization. A flood in India, and epidemic in Zimbabwe, high economic inflation in Brazil, or a change in government in Russia is not only widely known around the world, but has impacts throughout the world. How small the world now seems compared to the time before the advancements in information technology began."
