    Research Strategies

    All students should be able to:

    Recognize that the use of accurate and complete information is the basis for critical thinking and problem solving

    • appreciate that information literacy is a lifelong learning skill
    • seek information from diverse sources, contexts, disciplines and cultures and evaluate these diverse viewpoints to make informed decisions

    Use appropriate tools to identify and locate potential sources of information

    • demonstrate an understanding that no single source is comprehensive and acknowledge the importance of using a variety of search strategies, search systems, and information formats
    • differentiate among available search tools, such as library catalogs, subscription databases, and the Internet
    • select appropriate tools for information need
    • identify potential avenues of assistance

    Develop and use a variety of search strategies

    • demonstrate an understanding of keyword searching
    • demonstrate an understanding of Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and how they affect search results
    • demonstrate an understanding of truncation and wildcards
    • build search strategies that demonstrate appropriate use of controlled vocabularies, phrase searching and proximity operators

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • evaluate search results and determine if it is necessary to modify the search strategy, research question or working thesis

    Reference

    All students should be able to:

    Develop and use a variety of search strategies

    • acquire and develop a vocabulary specific to the research question
    • limit or expand research focus, adjusting search strategies to locate sources specific to the research question

    Use appropriate tools to identify and locate potential sources of information

    • use reference sources (encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, atlases, etc), print and online, to become familiar with topic

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • identify strengths and limitations of coverage in reference sources

    Books and Instructional Media

    All students should be able to:

    Develop and use a variety of search strategies

    • execute effective searches to locate books and instructional media

    Use appropriate tools to identify and locate potential sources of information

    • identify and locate resources using the Schmidt Library online catalog
    • identify local and worldwide library holdings using the other online catalogs and databases
    • use Document Delivery to obtain materials from other libraries

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • identify strengths and limitations of coverage in book sources and instructional media

    Periodicals

    All students should be able to:

    Develop and use a variety of search strategies

    • formulate search strategies and execute effective searches to locate articles in periodical sources

    Use appropriate tools to identify and locate potential sources of information

    • identify, locate and retrieve materials using print indexes and electronic databases available through the Schmidt Library
    • determine Schmidt Library holdings
    • use Document Delivery to obtain materials from other libraries

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • identify strengths and limitations of coverage in periodical sources

    Internet

    All students should be able to:

    Develop and use a variety of search strategies

    • execute effective searches to identify, locate and retrieve credible Internet sources

    Use appropriate tools to identify and locate potential sources of information

    • differentiate between Internet search tools using automated indexing and those using human analysis of sources
    • identify quality gateways to web sources
    • utilize a variety of search tools and advanced search functions

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • identify strengths and limitations of coverage in Internet sources
    • demonstrate an understanding of issues relating to the credibility of Internet sources

    Evaluation

    All students should be able to:

    Use accurate and complete information for critical thinking, problem solving and intelligent decision making

    • recognize the role of context in interpretations of information
      • distinguish fact from opinion
      • recognize prejudice, deception or manipulation
      • recognize logical fallacies

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • evaluate the quality of a resource by using multiple criteria
    • select information appropriate and relevant to the information need

    Scholarly/Popular/Trade

    All students should be able to:

    Use accurate and complete information for critical thinking, problem solving and intelligent decision making

    • identify characteristics and differentiate between scholarly, popular and trade publications
    • understand the importance and process of scholarly communication/peer-review

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • decide what material is appropriate for assignments based on an understanding of scholarly, popular and trade publications
    • use scholarly, popular and trade publications

    Primary/Secondary

    All students should be able to:

    Use accurate and complete information for critical thinking, problem solving and intelligent decision making

    • identify characteristics and differentiate between primary and secondary documents

    Evaluate information and select best sources

    • decide what material is appropriate for assignments based on this understanding
    • use primary and secondary documents

    Ethics/Law

    All students should be familiar with:

    Demonstrate an understanding of the legal, ethical and security implications of creating, sharing and using information

    • practice the guidelines for ethical behavior as outlined in the YCP Network Policy and YCP Student Handbook
    • identify and discuss issues related to
      • privacy and security of personal information
      • free vs. fee-based access to information
      • censorship and freedom of speech
      • intellectual property, copyright and fair use
      • plagiarism
      • ethical behavior in group

    Network Basics

    All students should be able to:

    Manage and communicate information professionally

    • demonstrate procedures for logging-on and logging-off the campus network on-campus or from a remote location
    • save files to and retrieve files from a personal network drive
    • access additional files and programs from the campus network
    • follow established etiquette and local guidelines for professional online communication

    Demonstrate an understanding of the legal, ethical and security implications of creating, sharing and using information

    • practice the guidelines for ethical behavior as outlined in the YCP Network Policy and YCP Student Handbook
    • use information technology responsibly

    Online Communication

    All students should be able to:

    Manage and communicate information professionally

    • understand basic YCP webmail functions, including forwarding and sending attachments
    • follow established etiquette and local guidelines for professional online communication
    • understand how to store and organize documents effectively

    Demonstrate an understanding of the legal, ethical and security implications of creating, sharing and using information

    • identify and discusses issues related to privacy and security of personal information

    Presentations/Documents

    All students should be able to:

    Manage and communicate information professionally

    • produce and communicate information effectively utilizing word processing and presentation tools
    • understand the principles of good graphic design and enhances oral and written presentations documents/presentations based on this understanding
    • evaluate the effectiveness/success of products developed and presented
