Pay for Print FAQ

Each York College ID card will also function as a York College Flex Card. "Pay for Print" is available in the computer labs and in the Schmidt Library. Printers and copiers assess a $0.10 charge per page. Full-time students receive $10 credit per semester and part-time students are allotted $5 per semester. After the allotted credit is depleted, the user's Flex Card Account is charged.

Additionally, the following services will accept the York College Flex Card:

  • Vending machines in Campbell Hall Coffee Cart, Life Science Lobby and Wolf Gym Vending area
  • Laundry machines in CCM, Manor Northeast, Brockie, Susquehanna and Manor North.
  • The Postal Center and the Schmidt Library will also accept the Flex Card.

What is Pay-for-Print?

Pay-for-Print is a system that utilizes your Flex Card account and allows you to print on campus.

Why was it implemented?

Pay-for-Print was implemented to help reduce excessive printing on campus.  Previously, because printing was considered to be free, little effort was apparent in attempts to reduce wastefulness.  Hundreds of thousands of printed pages were ignored, never picked up and had to be recycled. After conducting research York College has decided to charge for printing, a program which many other schools have instituted. The five main objectives of this solution are:
  • Significantly reduced waste printing (paper and toner)
  • Improved management of printer services
  • Increased network efficiency
  • Recovery of printing costs
  • Utilization of Flex Card technology

The Pay-for-Print solution is not intended to make a profit!

How much does it cost?

Printing will cost $0.10 per page from any black-and-white printer.  Any printing from a color printer, whether color or black-and-white, will cost $0.50 per page.

How can I reduce my costs or the amount that I print?

  • Email information to yourself and email documents to professors or colleagues.
  • Download information; save it to your network drive or a USB drive.
  • Write down information the old fashioned way, especially if you only need brief notes or the call number for a book.
  • Print only the pages you need, instead of the entire document.  Preview what you are printing to ensure you only send the print job one time and are only printing what you need

Do I get any free printing?

At the beginning of every semester, each full-time YCP student will be credited with $10.00 in his/her Flex Card Account for printing.  This is equivalent to 100 black-and-white printed pages.  Part-time students will be credited with $5.00 at the beginning of each semester.  Money reserved for printing in your account is NOT available for other purchases.

How do I pay for printing?

Additional monies can be added to your Flex Card Account at any time.  You can also make a payment at the Business Office to receive more credit for printing.  Full-time students will receive $10.00 (or $5.00 if you are a part-time student) at the beginning of each semester towards printing (money reserved for printing in your account is not available for other purchases).

How do I add money to my Flex Card account?

You can add money to your Flex Card account through the YCP website. Click here to add money to your account.  You may use a credit card to add money to your account.

What happens if I lose my card?

Click here to go to main Flex Card Page.

Will any unused money in my account rollover or be refunded?

No.  Unused money in your Flex account can not be rolled over or refunded at the end of the school year.  Although we would like to provide this service, no system is in place that can do this.  Our research indicates that this system is costly and would require a major configuration to the network environment in the labs.  This additional cost and staff to manage the manual process of refunds would only reduce the initial quota of the free prints and/or raise the price per page.

What happens if I find out I don’t have enough money in my account after I send my job to print?

If there is not enough money in your account to print your job, you will be notified when attempting to send the job to a printer.

What do I do if I forget to log out?

It is important to delete all print jobs you have in the queue and LOG OFF of the network before you leave a computer.  If you stay logged on someone will be able to use that computer and print documents under your account with your money!  If you realize that you forgot to log off, return to the computer you were using as soon as possible.

What do I do if my printing keeps getting denied?

If you are receiving a "Transaction Denied" message at a computer please do one of the following:

What do I do if my print job(s) didn’t print or there was an error of some kind during the printing process?

Please go to the IT Help Desk located in PAC 181 or call extension # 1559 and let them know.  You will need to fill out a Printing Refund Request Form.  Upon review they will send the Business Office a refund invoice.  Even if you are issued a refund, you WILL NOT receive cash.  The refund will be credited to your Flex Card account at the end of the semester.
