Hardware and Software Recommendations for New Students:
Install ALL Microsoft Windows Updates BEFORE arriving on campus.
Install YCP provided McAfee products before arriving on campus.

Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows XP Home or Professional SP2 or above, Windows 2000 SP4 with rollup, or Mac OS 10.3 and higher.
(Windows 98 and ME are NOT compatible with the network) - Microsoft Office Suite with Microsoft Word
- Warranty – 3 year minimum recommended
- 1.0 GB DDR2 SDRAM
- 40X CD-RW / DVD
- Pentium 4 or equivalent AMD Processor (Minimum dual-core)
- 40 GB Hard Drive
- Flat Panel Display – may help for work areas of limited space
- Internal 56k Modem (Not necessary for on-campus)
- Integrated 10/100 Ethernet Card
- Cable for Ethernet Card – CAT 5e Cable with RJ45 Connector (at least 10 feet)
- Virus Protection – All student owned machines are required have installed the current version of the McAfee® Antivirus® program that York College offers to students.
Virus Info for Students:
These programs will be required for ALL student machines that will be connected to the network. The Information Technology Department strongly encourages students to download and install this software before arrival on-campus.
The York College Information Technology Department offers an anti-virus and anti-spyware solution that is available for student use at no cost. McAfee® Antivirus® and McAfee® Anti-Spyware® will be available for students running Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or higher and Windows Vista. McAfee® Virex® for Macintosh™ will be available to students for MAC OSX 10.2.6, 10.2.8, 10.3x, 10.4x; Mactel 10.4.4 and later.
These products will be available to download from MyYCP ( my.ycp.edu ) under the "For Students" Tab. Packets containing a valid YCP network username and password (which is required to access MyYCP) will be mailed home for new students after August 1st.
This required anti-virus software will also be available for installation during the York College network registration process.

Notes:
- Wireless internet is available in the Schmidt Library, Student Union, Grumbacher, Grantley Hall, a number of Academic areas and may be available in the fall for Penn, Beard, North, South and Richland Residence Halls.
- Floppy and Zip Disks are no longer available on college owned systems.
- On-campus – no modem is needed or available.
- No unauthorized wireless access points, routers, hubs, or switches are allowed.
Residence Hall Connectivity:
Students will need to complete a registration process before network access is granted. To start this process, simply plug the ethernet cable into both the datajack and ethernet card (Network Interface Card) in the computer. Then open an internet browser (Internet Explorer is recommended) and directions will be given to complete the registration.
Students must also have the following in order to complete the registration process in the residence halls.
- YCP username and password
- Windows XP SP2 or above, Windows Vista, or Mac OS 10.3 or above
- YCP offered virus protection

3. YCP offered Virus Protection Product
Failure to have one or all of these requirements will result in no connectivity in the residence halls.
It is also recommended to install a spyware scanning program and scan your computer. While this is not a requirement it is highly recommended. Information on a free spyware scanning program is available here.
New Machine(s):
To eliminate surprises -- Set up machine(s) before leaving home to verify that everything is set up and working properly.
MyYCP Portal:
A central web area to access your email, campus and group announcements, courses, personal calendar, student accounts, the ability to register for classes, add and drop, and much more all in one convenient place with a single sign-on! To access, open Internet Explorer and navigate to http://my.ycp.edu/. Use your YCP username and password to log on. We encourage all students to navigate to this new site and find out how convenient and accessible information can be from this one single resource.
NOTE: In early August, network accounts for new students will be generated and mailed to the student’s home address. This will give students new to YCP the opportunity to access the college network and become familiar with resources available to them.
Email:
Your email address will be your username@ycp.edu. The YCP Webmail can be accessed through the MyYCP Portal, (http://my.ycp.edu/) by clicking on the Email tab. The York College web-based email is available virtually anywhere in the world, from any web browser on any computer using the URL https://mail.ycp.edu/.
Banner Web:
Banner Web is the student information system. Students can access grades, general financial information, unofficial transcripts, tuition information, class schedules, final grades and much more. To access Banner Web, go to the MyYCP Portal http://my.ycp.edu/, click on YCP Services Tab and click on YCP Web.
York Flex Card/Pay for Print:
Your college ID card will function as the York Flex Card. The Flex Card is expanding into additional areas on campus beginning Fall Semester 2005. “Pay for Print” will be initiated in the main computer labs and in the Schmidt Library. Printers and copiers will assess a $0.10 charge per sheet. Full-time students will receive $10 per semester credit for free prints and copies and part-time students will be allotted $5 per semester. After the credit is used, your Flex Card Account will be charged. Additionally, the following services will accept the York Flex Card: vending machines in Campbell Hall Coffee Cart, Life Science Lobby and Wolf Gym Vending area, laundry machines in CCM, Manor Northeast, Brockie, Susquehanna and Manor North. The Postal Center and the Schmidt Library will also accept the Flex Card.
