Opportunities and Activities
The Department of History and Political Science strongly encourages students to get involved and to participate in a variety of Departmental and College-wide activities.DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS
The Millard E. Gladfelter Award: Provides up to $1,000 to one or two students each academic year to support research and special projects focused on critical issues in social, environmental, economic, or political affairs. Selected students work with faculty on a year long research project (six credits of Independent Study).
The Ida G. Gladfelter Fellowship: Provides up to $1,000 to one student each academic year to support research and special projects focused on critical issues in social, environmental, economic, or political affairs. Selected students work with faculty on a year long research project (six credits of Independent Study).
Khana Award: Academic achievement in International Studies.
Kenneth S. Hatch Award: Provides credit for purchase of textbooks at the York College Bookstore for students who exhibit academic merit and financial need.
James L. Morrison Award: Academic achievement in American history courses.
Departmental Recognition: Awarded at graduation to students who have combined academic achievement with a record of service and involvement.
DEPARTMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS
History and Political Science Organization: Organizes debates, panels, and speakers programs for the Department and the College at large.
Past and Present: A journal entirely managed, edited, and published each year by our students featuring the best scholarly work of our majors.
Pi Sigma Alpha (Phi Psi Chapter): The national honor society for political science students.
Phi Alpha Theta (Alpha Theta Tau Chapter): The national honor society for history students.
Model European Union: An intercollegiate gathering of students interested in European politics and foreign affairs.
Model United Nations: An intercollegiate gathering of students interested in international politics and foreign affairs.
Model Arab League: An intercollegiate gathering of students interested in Arab politics and foreign affairs.
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
Speakers: Often brought in both to enrich classes and for extra-curricular discussions and lectures. They provide an opportunity to interact with experts outside of York College.
Internships: Available in museums, archives, historic sites, political institutions, government agencies, political parties, lobbying groups, public interest groups, and the media to name just a few. We encourage students to pursue opportunities both in the York area and in other locations.
Faculty/Student Interaction: Our Faculty are well-published and professionally engaged and are very willing to share their expertise with students in their offices and other formal and informal settings.
Independent Study Courses: Students may ask the faculty to work with them on Independent Study Projects to explore new topics or existing course material more deeply.
Special Topics Courses: Faculty may also offer Special Topics Courses to share their research with groups of interested students.
COLLEGE-WIDE ACTIVITIES
Student Scholars Week: A week long college-wide event featuring student research. The highlight of the week is Student Scholars Day when students from all departments on campus present their original research. Usually our senior seminar students in history and political science present papers but students in other courses may do so as well.
Alpha Chi: National Honor Society open to all majors.
Student Senate: The student government organization on campus.

Other Activities: The Student Activities Office and the College Catalog provide an extensive listing of other academic, social and sports, and community activities for your involvement.
