Definition and Purpose
Financial aid at York College consists of scholarships, grants, loans, and employment opportunities which are available to help students pursue their chosen course of study.Given the continually rising cost of education, it has become increasingly necessary for more students to seek student aid. No student or parent should hesitate to inquire about the availability of or eligibility for such assistance. Most financial aid programs are based upon the philosophical belief that, wherever possible, the student and his or her family have the primary responsibility for financing educational costs. Therefore, most financial aid resources serve to supplement, rather than replace, the resources of the family. While no applicant or family is expected to contribute everything they have to educational costs, every attempt is made to determine a reasonable contribution from the current income and assets of the family. The funds necessary to provide these financial aid resources are received from a variety of sources. Although federal funds are perhaps the most evident, state and local government, private business and industry, student and community organizations, and York College itself make significant contributions to the financial aid programs which are made available to students requiring assistance. No single source of funds could possibly be adequate to meet the needs of all worthy applicants. Rather, it takes the cooperation of all parties to make the post-secondary education accessible to all who can benefit from the experience.
