The York College of Pennsylvania Secondary Education General Science Program provides a foundation in theory and practice in science and education. The curriculum provides a broad basis in science education. The college curriculum outline, referred to as a checksheet, lists the general academic requirements, the required courses for the major and selected specialization courses. The checksheet indicates the professional preparation courses needed.
The YCP General Science Secondary Education Degree Program covers the science spectrum. Depth is provided in one of three areas. Thespecialization areas are biology, chemistry and physics. The student selects a specialization area and is required to complete six to eight credits in that area. This provides some depth. Students are also encouraged to become members in professional organizations, attend science and educational conferences, do reading in science journals and view non-print science media to provide depth. Emphasis is on a laboratory approach to teaching science and on laboratory skills through laboratory activities.
