Secondary English teachers must be competent in the content areas they will be teaching. This requires that prospective teachers possess knowledge of the following areas:
  • Language Development
  • Composition
  • Grammar and Usage
  • Reading
  • Literature
  • Oral Language
  • Non-print and Instructional Media
  • Current Research and Practices

Teachers of English must demonstrate competence in the following areas of pedagogy:

  • Instructional Planning
  • Instructional Performance
  • Evaluation and Assessment
  • Oral and Written Language to Improve Learning
  • Computer Use and Instructional Technology

The following attributes must be developed by English teachers:

  • Strong Oral and Written Communication Skills
  • Concern for Students
  • Respect for Individual Differences
  • Adaptability
  • Professional Concern and Professional Growth
  • Awareness of Current Events

Students in the Secondary English program are exposed to models or effective teaching through the course work they are required to take. Through the student teaching experience, students are given additional opportunities to observe and practice various aspects of effective teaching.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education guidelines, a person holding a certificate endorsed for English is qualified to teach the following subjects: literature, composition, grammar and usage, theater, speech and dramatics, business English, journalism.

The English or Communication certificate qualifies a person to teach English-as-a Second Language within the grade scope of the certificate. In addition, the English or Communication certificate qualifies a person to teach developmental reading when provided as an integrated part of an English/Language Arts program.
