Secondary Communications teachers must be competent in the content areas they will be teaching. This requires that prospective teachers possess knowledge of the following areas:

Students in the Secondary Communications program are exposed to models or effective teaching through the course work they are required to take. Through the student teaching experience, students are given additional opportunities to observe and practice various aspects of effective teaching. A person holding a certificate endorsed for Communication is qualified to teach the following subjects: literature, composition, grammar and usage, theater, speech and dramatics, business English, journalism, and communication using non-print media such as television, radio, and film. The English or Communication certificate qualifies a person to teach English-as-a Second Language within the grade scope of the certificate. In addition, the English or Communication certificate qualifies a person to teach developmental reading when provided as an integrated part of an English/Language Arts program.
