The primary purpose of the secondary biology education curriculum is to produce excellent biology educators. The professional biology teacher must be a strong biologist as well as an outstanding educator.
In order to prepare the student for this objective, the biology education program at York College of Pennsylvania depends on a close association between the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Education. The curriculum offers the student the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in mathematics and science with course emphasis in the biological sciences. The program also encourages the student to explore the process of learning based on current research in effective teaching and learning theory, especially as applied to biology education. It then promotes development of effective teaching strategies which bridge content and pedagogy; integrating the two within the context of a liberal arts education into a unified whole.
Upon completion of the biology education program the professional secondary biology education major should:
- have a strong background in the biological sciences with supporting courses in mathematics, physical and chemical sciences.
- have experience in scientific research using state-of-the art equipment and techniques.
- have developed effective teaching strategies in biology which improve the success of all students, with special concern for non-gender based equality in instruction.
- be able to develop and stimulate creative and critical thinking skills in students.
- be able to promote learning through experience.
- be knowledgeable of the current research in education, especially as it pertains to biology education.
- promote students to become critically thinking, effective, Òbiology-mindedÓ citizens.
- develop a professional identity through association with professional organization.
If you would like additional copies, you may obtain a Biology Education checksheet from the Department of Education Office.
