    Pre-Professional Educator Status (PPES)

    The Pre-Professional Educator Status is the checkpoint through which all Pre Education students must pass to become an Education Major.  This process takes place at the end of 48 credits and/or the end of the first semester sophomore year.  Achieving PPES will allow the student to continue in the Education Major.  The PPES applicant will fill out the Application for Advancement to PPES.  In addition to the application, there are several other items that must be included.  A chart on the following page will highlight all the requirements for PPES.  Some specific information that will be helpful for fulfilling the requirements is listed below.

    1. Six Required Courses

    Students transferring from another institution should see the Coordinator of Field Experience to verify transferring courses equitable to these YCP courses

    2. Transcripts and GPA

    To apply for PPES, students need only submit a photocopy of their college transcript.  Photocopied transcripts including the actual grades earned must be submitted with the PPES Application.  To obtain York College transcripts, students need to use their online account to print out this information.  To obtain transcripts from other institutions, students will need to contact the Records Office of that institution.

     

    3. PRAXIS Exams

    All Education Majors are required to take the first three PRAXIS Exams to apply for PPES.  The three exams are:

    4. Background Clearances

    Students must submit the following clearances at the end of the first semester sophomore year:

     Pennsylvania Police Background Check
     Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance

    The applications for these clearances are in the YCP Education Office.  Each student is responsible for:

    1.  completing the applications
    2.  paying for the applications' submission fee
    3.  mailing the applications
    4.  submitting a photocopy of each clearance to the Education Office


    5. Field Experience

    To apply for PPES, students must have successfully completed one thirty-hour Block of Field Experience. 

    • If a student has already submitted a completed and signed Attendance Evaluation Form to the Department of Education Office, a photocopy of this Form must be attached to the PPES Application
    • If a student is submitting a newly completed and signed Attendance Evaluation Form, the original Form must be attached to the PPES Application

    6. Letter of  Application

    A typewritten letter of approximately 300 words must accompany the PPES Application.  The Letter should be addressed to the Department of Education and should discuss:

    • Why the student wishes to be a public school educator
    • Why the student would make an excellent candidate for the Teacher Preparation Program at York College


    The chart below is designed to assist students in acquiring all the items necessary for the PPES Application.

    It is imperative that all items be compiled into a single packet and delivered to the Department of Education Secretary and/or the Coordinator of Field Experience.

    When a student has achieved PPES, the student will be informed by mail and/or email.  The addresses used to inform students will be the addresses listed on their PPES applications.  Notification of PPES will take place during the second semester sophomore year.   Consequently, a student may begin scheduling EE and SE courses for the first semester junior year and/or summer of preceding junior year.
    Once a student has achieved PPES, the application and all paper work will be placed in the student's permanent Department of Education file folder located in the Department of Education Office.

    When a student has been denied PPES, the entire application packet is returned to the student's mailing address.  An explanation for the reason(s) of the denial is also included.  A student may resubmit the entire application packet as soon as the negligent requirements have been met.
